Fungal nail infection is caused by onychomycosis. This is a type of fungi that grows well in dark and moist surroundings. One symptom that can tell you if you have been infected by this fungus is that your fingernails start to become brittle and starts to change color to either yellowish or brownish. Research has proven that dermatophytes which are tiny organisms cause these fungal infections. These organisms live in between the nail and the nail base, though there is a protein covering called keratin between these spaces. The dermatophytes destroy this protein which, in effect, makes you fingernails look discolored and brittle.

If you have already been infected by this nasty fungus you can try tropical creams, oral medicines, sprays or a combination of the three is better. However, consult your doctor or much better a dermatologist when it comes to these medicines.
